Biofuel Research - a Transatlantic Dialogue

The European Union and the USA are following ambitious aims to expand the biofuel market. These policy goals produce a strongly growing demand for raw materials and thus require an introduction of sustainability criteria for biomass production. Additionally, new biofuels will, in the future, have to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a certain level.

Requirements such as the abovementioned pose fresh challenges for biomass producers and distributors as well as biofuel producers. Consequently, a number of countries worldwide have intensified their research activities in the area of biofuels over the past years. The strategy followed in most countries is commonly called "from field to tank". How are Europe and the US implementing this strategy? In order to highlight common ground as well as differences, and to identify fields for cooperation in biofuel research,

  • the German Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV),
  • the Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe (FNR) - Agency for Renewable Resources,
  • the Energy Biosciences Institute (EBI),
  • the Deutsche BP
  • and the Deutsche BiomasseForschungsZentrum (DBFZ) - German Biomass Research Centre

would like to invite you to the conference
